All Star Superman is out today, I was lucky to watch it a few days ago - prior to its release.

Now, Im not going to focus on production values during this review - everyone who is a fan of DC Animation knows its some of the best produced around. Its well produced, the scripts aren't kiddyfied, and the Animation is always top-knotch.

Although all the aforementioned points apply All-Star Superman - it is VERY lack-luster in other ways.

I never read the All-Star Superman comics or graphic novel, twelve-issue comic book series that supposedly would "strip down the Man of Steel to his timeless, essential elements" - ran from November 2005 to October 2008.

The series was written by Grant Morrison, drawn by Frank Quitely, digitally inked by Jamie Grant.

Its a very pretty looking comic, from the frames and pages I've seen - and they try to translate the "style" of the Comic somewhat to the Animation. It works up to a point, but the whole thing looks a little too quant for me - even The Parasite looks cute! (Especially when he's all big and bloaty).

That brings me onto the story, the "essential elements" claim of the Graphic novel - in the Movie it just comes over as a series of unrelated vignettes. With a very slim story binding them all together, plus they skirt around parts which would be interesting to see - for example, Superman and Lois are invited to a celebration in Atlantis - but do we get to see it, no we don't. But they waste time on Samson and Atlas II trying to chat Lois Lane up!

Casting wise, it was okay - just not brilliant.

James Denton was reasonable as Superman, but his portrayal seemed the same for Clark as for Superman. There was no line or definition drawn between the two, any casuall listener would have know Clark was Supermans secret identity straight away. Now Im not saying Denton should change his voice between the two sides of the character, but surely Superman should seem more confident and commanding.

Christina Hendricks who voiced Lois Lane, a lovely girl with a sweet voice - unfortunately she is no voice actor. Her delivery seemed detached and unprofessional. When are those who do the casting for Animation realize that just because someone is a good Movie/TV Actor, it doesn't necessarily mean they are going to be any good as a Voice Actor.

Anthony LaPaglia was cast as the Voice of Lex Luthor, I was quite excited about this piece of casting when I first heard about it - being a fan of Seven Days.

But (again) unfortunately LaPaglia just couldn't do it. It might be because of the dialogue, or because he wasn't into what he was doing. But LaPaglia'a Luthor came over as a petulant child.

Truly talented actors can rise above poorly thought out dialogue, using inflections and vocal tone to convey something deeper than is written down for them in the Script - LaPaglia seems to lack that skill. Its a shame really, a missed opportunity.

Overall I give All-Star Superman just 4/10, a valient attempt - but it could have been so much more than it was.

Not compared to the Shazam/Superman short, and All-Star is a lot longer LoL!

If its on TV or you can rent it, go for it - its not worth buying IMHO unless its in the Bargain Bin!
